The significance of each individual's leadership role may differ, but essentially we are all leaders in some way or another whether we realize it or not. As traditional approaches to leadership are being replaced by 'leadership through influence', credibility is established through how values and purposes are consistently embodied in one's life. From this viewpoint leadership begins with self, clarity and honesty about who we are, where we want to go and how we are going to get there are fundamental building blocks to the concept of personal leadership. Personal leadership also means accountability to yourself and to others. An essential element of strength in personal leadership is the ability to care about yourself and the people you work for and with.
